Fourth Tied ODI in Cricket History - India Versus West Indies
by D. Victor
Just two weeks after tying a match against Pakistan in Lahore, the West Indies managed the feat again. This time, their opponents were India and the venue was the WACA Ground in Perth, Australia. For India, this was their second tied game, as they already tied a Test match against the Aussies at Chennai in 1986. The West Indies participated in several thrilling finishes to this date - the historic first tied Test at Brisbane; the first tied ODI against Australia; and the third tied ODI against Pakistan.
India batted first in this fixture, with Ravi Shastri and Kris Srikkanth opening the batting. The Windies got the breakthrough early, with Patrick Patterson snaring Srikkanth for three runs; India was 8/1.Sanjay Manjrekar joined Shastri but perished soon after for 15, with the score on 35. Next in was a young Sachin Tendulkar. However, the future batting maestro failed in this innings - dismissed by Anderson Cummins for just one run.
India lost wickets steadily, as 41/3 became 58/4 when Mohammad Azharuddin fell to Curtly Ambrose for six runs. Only Pravin Amre (20 off 50 balls) and Manoj Prabhakar (13 off 22 balls) offered any resistance down the order. India laboured throughout their innings, unable to dominate the West Indies' pace bowlers on a bouncy Perth wicket. The sub-continentals laboured to 126 all out off 47.4 overs. Curtly Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall and Anderson Cummins took two wickets each for the Windies. The West Indies needed only 127 runs to win off 50 overs.
The West Indies had a terrible start in reply to the Indians' modest score. Desmond Haynes was caught at the wicket off the first ball of the innings for nought. Philo Wallace was next out for 11, the victim of Prabhakar. Richie Richardson fell for 12, before Brian Lara and Carl Hooper had a 30-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, Hooper (12), Athurton (1) and Lara (14) fell within six runs to leave the Windies tottering at 61/6. When David Williams (5) and Malcolm Marshall (7) departed, the West Indies were in a crisis at 76/8.
Curtly Ambrose and Anderson Cummins - both tail-end batsmen - helped the West Indies cross the 100-mark. Ambrose scored 17 runs off 25 balls before he was back in the pavilion via the run out route. Cummins was the last man out when the scores were already level, caught off the part-time bowling of Sachin Tendulkar. The first match of the triangular series was tied and the West Indies and India shared the points.
